Our Lincoln Celebration features the American Spiritual Ensemble, the Lexington Philharmonic performing Copland’s Lincoln Portrait with spoken word, and the premiere performance of selection from River of Time, a new Kentucky opera (lyrics by James Rodgers, music by Joseph Baber) about Lincoln as a young man. Lexington native and Chicago Symphony violinist Nathan Cole will play some of the haunting music made known widely to the public by filmmaker Ken Burns’ The Civil War.It will also include vignettes from new Kentucky Chautauqua®drama: Mary Todd Lincoln and her sister Emilie Todd Helm, Margaret Garner, and Abraham Lincoln. Kentucky’s poet laureate, Jane Gentry Vance, will select and read her favorite Lincoln poem, and the Kentucky Repertory Theatre will present a cameo from Wade Hall’s drama, “One Man’s Lincoln.”
