Our Lincoln features the American Spiritual Ensemble, the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, performing Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait with spoken word by Nick Clooney, and the premiere national performance of selections from River of Time, a new Kentucky folk opera (lyrics by James Rodgers, music by Joseph Baber) about Lincoln as a young man. Nationally known violinist Mark O’Connor will play some of the haunting music made known widely to the public by filmmaker Ken Burns’ The Civil War. Our Lincoln will also include the extraordinary voice of Metropolitan Opera star Angela Brown performing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” as was sung in 1939 by Marian Anderson on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Dramatic selections include Kentucky Repertory Theatre’s cameo from “One Man’s Lincoln,” an original drama about Lincoln as told by his law partner, Billy Herndon, and Kentucky Chautauqua® vignettes voicing the opinions of those who knew Lincoln best. Kentucky’s poet laureate, Jane Gentry, will read her new poems dedicated to the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. |
